The Japan Seminar: Dean’s Introduction to Class 1
The following is a transcript of Dean Ramsden’s lecture to introduce the first class of the four Tokyo public lectures: November 14, 2009.
“Thank you for coming to the class this weekend. We’re going to be looking at exploring the chakra system from a very practical point of view. The chakra system is usually considered very esoteric, very spiritual but actually it’s a very practical way in which we can grow into the best possible human being. We are more than the nervous system, the brain … we are more than the physical body: we are beings of consciousness. Just as your body grows from being an infant into becoming an adult, so does your spiritual consciousness, your awareness, also grow.
And this is possible because of our evolution: the evolution of our consciousness as a species. Our physical body evolved from a basic mammal into being a very sophisticated human being; similarly, our energy consciousness system has developed.
In the world of energy healing, of spiritual healing, the chakra system is an energetic nervous system. If you want to develop yourself spiritually, personally, and to become the best human being, the chakra system holds the wiring for that, holds the program for that. Each of the chakras is a developmental stage, one above the other: one higher than the next. This weekend we are starting at the very base of what is basically a pyramid, a hierarchy of mechanism, to show how important the lower chakras are to our health and our well being.

But this kind of study is not just focused on physical health. It is also related to our relationships, as well as to our spiritual development. What I want to teach you this weekend is not just theory. Although I’ve studied for over twenty years at this point I’ve also trained spiritual healers, psychic healers, and I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t work. So I have a lot of practical experience.
So what I want to share with you this weekend, and in the other classes over the next two years are very precise, very functional ways of improving yourself as a human being. The improvements I’m talking about are improvements in your consciousness, and your ability to perceive what is going on outside you and within you. To grow as human beings, to grow spiritually, personally, it’s not enough to have “head” knowledge, to have information: we need experience. The experience I’m talking about is how your consciousness develops from one level to the next, actually integrating the lower level in order to get higher, and more refined.
Think back to how your were a very small child, and how the world seemed to you when you were three, four, five years old. In those early years you saw the world through the eyes of an infant, and you were protected by your parents, or your caregivers. And then you became a teenager, and suddenly you were not as dependent on your parents: you saw through your own eyes, and not through the eyes of others. At that moment you were no longer the child. The child was still “inside” you, but you had evolved to a new level of consciousness.
Now this would just be a curiosity except for the fact that we’ve found if you help someone heal or improve a chakra – improve their energy system – that it also improves their consciousness at the same time. So, psychological healing helps to understand but to really evolve and grow we need to work with more levels than just the psychological.

This weekend I’ll present to you a map of the human consciousness system such that you can actually learn to grow and evolve yourself. In other words, instead of just letting your personal growth and spiritual growth happen there are ways in which you can speed up the process very effectively. There are three main ways to improve your consciousness system. The first way is through personal work, by becoming a seeker: looking into yourself, and into the world. You look into the world with curious eyes. You don’t take things at face value. You question everything, the way we as young children would question our parents: “Why is this so?” And for many of us this is the primary mode of exploration, that we take on a spiritual quest to know ourselves, and to look at the world in a deep way.
The second way in which you can improve your energy consciousness system is to study in a group or in a system. So, you join a yoga class, you join a spiritual path, you study under a teacher … you become part of a group effort to explore. And the reason this works very well is that we are social animals; we grow as a group, we grow in a “village” community. Our growth can be sped up through studying with other people. Insights will come that we could not discover by ourselves, and experiences happen that would not happen if we were alone. So, in the spiritual world you would go and see the Guru, the teacher, join their community, go on retreats .. (there are) many ways to become part of a group.
The third way (which we are going to focus on this weekend) is what happens when you either receive an energy healing, or you give an energy healing to another person. Energy healing has been part of our culture or for millennia, and always will be a part of our culture (or society), because we grow through healing each other.

We’ve called it lots of different names in different cultures. In China it’s called Qi Gong, in the West it’s called Spiritual Healing… lots of names for the same process. We’ve found that it is possible to interact and change (and hopefully improve) someone’s energy system, as healers. And all of us our healers; all of us have both given and received a healing event in our lives, and will continue to do so. When your child falls over, and injures her knee and starts to cry, it’s natural for you to put your hand over the knee and calm the pain. That is an act of healing, an act of reaching out to another to support them, and speed up the healing process. Or, when your friend calls you up on the phone, and they’re upset, or crying, something has happened … it’s natural for you to be compassionate, and support them through their healing process. Again: normal, human interactions that we all appreciate when it happens to us, and some of us actually train to be more effective at doing it.

But what we are going to study this weekend, and in other classes, is how to make that process of healing (and helping) more efficient, and very focused. Because we’ve found in the developmental growth of a human being (and especially of a psychic human being) there are certain things that must be dealt with, must be learned. Now, some of you here are interested in becoming a healer yourself, or exploring your psychic gift. The practical information we will work with this weekend should help you become an even better psychic, and even better healer than before. But if you are not interested in healing others, if you are interested in healing yourself, these skills and this information about the chakra system can also help you.
We human beings are unique in many ways, in that we are born into the world with all of our potential but no instruction manual. My computer projector (points) has an instruction manual, which I’ll need to read to make it work, but (at least) it has an instruction manual: human beings don’t have one. So, what happens as human beings is that we have to go through thirty, forty, fifty years of learning about life in order to discover the instruction manual of how to grow into a healthy person. And as we all know, there are many different maps of consciousness, different maps of development: Western and Asian maps. The map I’ll teach you is not “the best” map, but it’s a very concise map of healing the chakra system. In a way this is a manual to the chakra system; it’s a very technical approach to healing each chakra (along with how we can) deal with each of life’s issues, and challenges. And what’s interesting to me is that often you don’t even have to understand the extent of the problem (we are facing) if the chakra (involved) starts to heal.
For instance, if a client comes to me and they are struggling to find a home, to find a place in the world, I know from my map of the chakra system that we are dealing with the root chaka … with Muladhara chakra. The symptom points the way to where someone’s chakra development is in need of healing, or additional support. Once I know the issue the client is struggling with I can zero in on the chakra involved, or a chakra associated (with the issue).
Or, if a client comes to me with difficulties in relationship I know, at the very least, that the second chakra – Swadhisthana – will need some work. If a client is struggling with understanding something about life, is – still as an adult – looking through the eyes of a child, then the third chakra, Manipura, will need some work. So, when I as the healer (or, in the role of a friend) understand the issue, and how it fits with the client’s development, I can then zero in – precisely – on where their chakra system needs support, or help.

Many of you here have studied or read about other systems of energy healing, and very often you will learn a healing approach to balance all the chakras, and deal with the entire system as a whole, rather than to zero in. So, it’s as if you are going to have a hurt shoulder worked on, and the massage therapist works on your entire body as well as your shoulder. Now, I’m not suggesting anything is wrong with this approach because we do need to have a balanced system, but I am suggesting that this (i.e, any whole balancing technique) is only the beginning stage. In this example, we need to go into the shoulder: the problem is in the shoulder. We need to work with specifically is affecting it.
It’s the same thing with the chakra system. If I have difficulty with my personal relationships, difficulty to attach to someone – or to let go of someone – I have to look at my second chakra – Swadhisthana – because that is the primary place relationship functions (in the auric field). So, I’m sure you would all agree we all struggle with relationships: it’s part of our human journey. The chakra system and the cords – how we cord to someone else – the worth the study just by itself, because relationship is so important.
So, tomorrow, Sunday, we will work specifically on the second chakra, and learn how we psychically attach to other people, and how we learn to let go, or move on from challenging relationships. We’ll look at the way in which we psychically connect, and how we process the relationship with another person in our energy field, and what is involved with that. But today we are going to focus on an overview of why relational energy healing work can be helpful to you, and we are going to focus on Muladhara chakra: the root chakra. Now, when you pick up a book on the chakra system very often it doesn’t give you much practical information: it tells you about the color of the chakra, and the Hindu gods associated with it, but we want to look at the practical side of chakra. Some healers have integrated psychology into their study of the chakra system such as Barbara Brennan. I taught at the Barbara Brennan School Of Healing for ten years, so I have a lot of experience of how she put together a certain way of the energy system with a psychology. I moved on from that work, and studied developmental psychology and some other systems of psychic healing, which that led me to get excited about chakras as a developmental system. That’s what I want to share with you this weekend – information on how practical this can be. To cut through a lot of the issues we have, and heal them very fast.
I’m a strange person in that I started out as a scientist and then I became a psychic healer; but I still like what works, what is very practical, very “scientific” in some way, like an engineer who wants to find out what makes a difference. That’s the reason we learn the mapping of consciousness in the chakra system: to zero in like a laser, on what the issue is. To heal it and open it up, so a person can move on with their lives.
Tomorrow, when we work with the second chakra, and the chakra cords that connect us to others, we’ll learn ways in which we can speed up how we deal with challenging relationships. This also works in terms of business or our working life, in our relationships with people at work. Again, very practical information in how to deal with human relationships from an energetic point of view.”
